INNER LANDSCAPES - SISĂ„ISET MAISEMAT

Inner Landscapes is a collaborative art project with elderly citizens from Finland and Japan organized by three artists, two ceramic artists Tomoko Kurahara and Satoko Sai from Tokyo, Japan and a photographer from Finland. The first part of our project was realized as a part of Turku2011, the European Capital of Culture program through 2009-2011. The second part will be realized in Tokyo in 2017 where we will have two new members in our group, Kinuyo Mukaibo and Momoko Yajima.

Inner Landscapes project is dialogue between diverse times and two cultures, Japanese and Finnish.
The exhibition brings together ceramics, photography, sound and video images. It digs through layers of history by unearthing individual stories and album photos.

The works in the exhibition expand on and enrich mainstream historiography. They tell about how our collective memory is formed. The use of private historical sources also helps to uncover the
forgotten past and suggests new insights into social and cultural history. The exhibition on the whole challenges us to think about communality, paths of life, and growing old.

Inner Landscapes project and exhibition are also a tribute to the people who share their stories with us. Some of these stories are included in the Inner Landscapes book that we published in 2012. Also many stories are included in the Inner Landscapes video that I made in 2011 and which is part of our exhibition.
