INNER LANDSCAPES - SISĂ„ISET MAISEMAT

"Inner Landscapes" project is a collaboration with Japanese ceramic artist unit Satoko Sai & Tomoko Kurahara. It dives into layers of time through old album photos and personal stories and is a dialogue both between different eras and two cultures, Finnish and Japanese.

The first part of this project, "Inner Landscapes, Turku" we made during 2009-11 in Finland with local old people of the city of Turku. Our project was part of the "Turku2011 - European Capital of Culture" year and we exhibited it for the first time in Turku Castle, Finland 2011.
The second part of the projec, "Inner Landscapes, Tokyo" was finished in 2020. It will be exhibited for the first time at the Tokyo Shibya Koen-dori Gallery in Tokyo 2021. This exhibition is organized by the gallery as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture. More information in the home page of the gallery: https://inclusion-art.jp/en/archive/event/2021/20210213-71.html

"Inner Landscapes" exhibitions bring together three medias of art, photography, ceramics and video. They reflect on human being's place in the world and cross the present and the past through memories evoked by 50-80 year old album photographs. They are also tribute to the people who have shared their time and memories with us. It was a fascinating journey to be able to aproach a historical period through the life stories of these people and to be able to make camera obscura portraits with them. I think that the most interesting periods in the human life cycle are childhood and old age; they are like the two ends of a rainbow, where treasures can be found.
